Are you one of a million?

This recent NPO has a rather interesting approach to solving global issues: expose a global issue (e.g., refugee camps) to 1 million people, then move on to another one. While I feel it's a great initiative and agree that knowledge of global issues is always amiss, I'm somehow skeptical.

  • millionsoulsaware.orgWill it reach those people who have the (will)power to effect change?

  • Would it effect your vote?

  • Maybe even give you a perpetually-ingrained sense of social responsibility?

Ultimately I question whether the internet, since its birth, has brought (more) social justice to the world? Perhaps I just fear that the quiet welcome surge of late in ewareness is just the latest marketing ploy, and is diluting what could instead be a harbinger of a less Orwellian world.

I would be careful about the article linked by 'the latest marketing ploy.' It is very anti-sustainability and although some of the points the author makes are accurate, he or she undermines the whole movement by singling out a few fashion trends. Beware when reading such garbage! It is easy to read it and say 'oh yeah, that's true, good point' but it should not be taken for more that a clever rant.

Touche. That article was terrible. What I meant is I feel there's much more of this:
http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/01/17/business/bxgreen.php
than this:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/28/business/media/28adco.html?ex=1324962000&en=f33eccf2356719c8&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Whereas in the former we are capitalizing on the trend for the sake of profit, in the later we capitalize on the trend for its sake.

thanks for posting about millionsoulsaware.org.

I do want to point something out: the idea is not to reach someone who has to power to change the issue. That's because there is no such person, or institute.

Raising awareness is a long term investement, and only by informing large crowds there will be support for change. (international) ignorance will always keep these issues going.
