Finally out in the field in Mexico!!!

Hola!

We finally had the opportunity to go into the field after a bunch of cancellations! woohoo!
We spent the night at the civil protection station, sleeping on bunk beds with tons of the workers. The next morning, we rode in the back of a pickup truck up to the volcano observatory. We were up 4000m and had a great view of the volcano...We were there to fix the infrasound station, take infrared images and to take COSPEC data to measure SO2 emission. Cool.

It was super exciting. Michelle had the 330am to 530am shift to watch for eruptions. She was pretty dead in the end. Marie-Claude didn't handle the elevation well, went to take a nap in the afternoon and woke up next to a pleasant middle aged man, Raul, who works at the civil protection centre (see picture).

The field was great! So much delicious oatmeal and tea. It was pretty cold up there, but we're going to the beach this weekend to compensate.

We miss you guys

ps. We saw Superman yesterday at the cinema. We forgot to ask if it was the original version...so we saw Superman in spanish yesterday at the cinema...

some arctic pics

Here are some pics from our camp... that's gabby and I in our tent. There's also a picture of the tents. There's Rob being very excited about our soil sampling! Also, a sunset picture after a pretty brutally windy and cloudy and cold day of hail, snow and rain (if i remember correctly).

I'll try to post a better description next time, but pictures are worth a thousand words, as they say!

Have you seen this rabbit stampeding?

Straight from the front page of the Calgary Post (as I imagine it):

"A rabbit going by the name 'Michelle Deakin,' and with a face to match, has once-more foiled long-time stampeder and avid gold seeker Yosemite Sam. Mr. Sam was planning on competing for 'Oiliest Stampeder,' a position only the filthly-richiest calgarians can dream of. Given this latest turn of events (portrayed below based on witness accounts), it seems Miss Deakin has a master-rabbit-minded plan of her own... though we're not really sure what that is as she was hesitant to make any comments to the press at the moment."

There is a town in North Ontario

Wow, I feel that so much has gone on on the blog during my absence, controversies, exciting parties! Well, over her in Northern Ontario, its actually really close to the states so its really at the southern end of Ontario but the whole west of Ontario is North. Wow what a waste of time that was. All is cool over here. We see lots of crazy wildlife. DUDES!! We saw a garder snake (une couleuvre) eat a toad, it was wild!! At first it just had its foot and then it slowly swallowed it whole!
Well have fun out there wherever you are. I miss you guys.

That reminds me, last night I dreamt that Michelle C and Marie-Claude bought a old blue car that was amphibian so it could go on the water and they drove around. It was pretty practical to drive from island to island which is what Jonathan and I do here on a canoe. A bunch of you were there too, it was like field school but out here. The car cost 800$ so the two girls slpit it 50-50.

Love-wave (sitting at a children's library on a tiny chair). Shut Up kid I'm trying to write on a blog... AW look what you made me write!

P.S. the title of the post is a reference to Helpless by Neil Young but in my case I am referring to Fort Frances!

GECKOS!

hey everybody!

fraser and i have ALSO successfully reached mexico! (where are you, marie-claude? we should all party in a hotel room somewhere!) we´ve been here about a month now, looking for evidence of subduction-erosion in oligocene-aged granites. granites? yes, granites. not very exciting, but maybe mexican granite is more exciting than canadian granite. maybe.

it´s hot as hell, but we´re doing most of our work along the coast or down rivers, so whenever we´re hot we just jump in the water (and our clothes are dry after 5 minutes). the rivers and landscapes are BEAUTIFUL, but the most exciting thing is all the awesome animals! i have some frog in the roof of my room, fraser has a giant iguana in his, and there are TONS of geckos! we also see lots of butterflies and tropical birds, but at least the scorpion count is only 2 and the singular tarantula appearance was made by a little baby (aww, so cute!).

anyway, i thought i´d check in with my fraser-granite news. i hope you´re all having wonderful summers, wherever you are, and i´ll see you in august!

In loving memory of...

Here lies but a memory
of remarks spoken boldly,
censored for the greater good
and in spirit of sisterhood
you are not forgotten.
